In the 80's John Sparrow was a staple of the NYC rock scene, his band "Johnny Sparrow & the Vidals" doing straight ahead rock originals, were common to see at the Lone Star Cafe, the Roxy, the Limelight and most of the Downtown music scene. They have opened for Stevie Ray Vaughn, Steve Forbert and numerous other acts. By 1987 John met Klyph Black who was signed to Manhattan Records with the band "Urgent". They struck up a friendship, a kinship, and the next thing you know they were writing and performing acoustic shows together. They developed a following and Black and Sparrow was formed.

An incredible duo consisting of Klyph Black of the Zen Tricksters and Johnny Sparrow......Black & Sparrow's new CD titled "Friend & Partner" (AMD 101) is a wonderful mix of acoustic music guaranteed to make anyone smile.....Klyph has shared the stage with many prominent performers including: Micky Hart, Donna Jean, David Nelson, Peter Rowan, Vassar Clements, Levon Helm, Buddy Cage, Michael Falzarano, Jason Crosby, Rob Barraco, Tom Constanten, DSO and many more. His music is currently being used on national TV in such shows as "Alias" and more....The acoustic sounds of "Friend & Partner" pleasantly range through a mix of styles, from blues to folk to country rock.....sweet sounding, enjoyable magic.....
Black and Sparrow has opened for Dave Mason, Aztec Two Step, Taj Mahal, Doc Watson, Leon Russel and Foreigner. They toured Switzerland in 1995 having two hits there; "Love on the Radio" and "Coming Home Soon".
By 1996 John had to take a break from playing due to personal reasons. Klyph than joined the already existing "Zen Tricksters" as bass player and vocalist and has found rewarding success.
In 2000 John started playing again. He is currently in Rock and Roll Circus and performs with Kylph in Black and Sparrow. The reviews are great till this day.
